My Roots, Your Experience
– The Story of Lake

I’m a native of Vaala – the quiet pine forests and the shores of this great lake are part of who I am. They were part of my childhood adventures, my safe haven in youth and the source of peace in my adult life. To me, the nature of Lake Oulujärvi is more than a landscape – it is home. It is everyday luxury you can feel in the silence, see in the sunset and breathe in the pure forest air.
When I founded Lake Oulujärvi Luxury Hideouts, I wanted to share all of this. I wanted travellers to experience the authenticity of nature and the local way of life. For us, luxury means space to breathe, time to simply be and small details that feel big because they are real. Our kind of luxury doesn’t glitter. It’s a quiet morning on a misty lakeshore, the warmth of the sauna, the crackle of a campfire. It’s a chance to slow down and feel more like yourself again.
This business comes from the heart. We want to bring vitality, work and well-being to the Lake Oulujärvi and Rokua region – but not at any cost. We aim to do it professionally, on nature’s terms, responsibly and with respect for our community. We believe that when tourism is sustainable, it enriches everyone – both guests and locals alike. Welcome to experience the uniqueness of Lake Oulujärvi – just as it is. Truly. Warmly. With a sense of luxury that comes from nature and being present.

Regenerative Tourism at Lake Oulujärvi Luxury Hideouts
At Oulujärvi Luxury Hideouts, our philosophy is rooted in regenerative and ecological values. Rather than constructing new buildings, we select and promote privately owned cottages and private hotel that meet our quality standards. This approach allows us to offer authentic, responsible stays while respecting the existing natural and built environment.
Regenerative tourism means giving back more than we take. For us, it’s about strengthening the well-being and vitality of our local community, creating employment, and helping villages around Lake Oulujärvi thrive. We work closely with local people and businesses – from cleaning and maintenance to guided experiences and catering – ensuring that every service supports local livelihoods and keeps the value of tourism within our region.
We believe that truly sustainable tourism grows together with the local community. Guests visiting Oulujärvi Luxury Hideouts are invited to experience more than just a holiday – they can become part of the community. We encourage our guests to explore and support local cafés, shops and events. Whether it’s joining a village celebration, meeting local producers, or enjoying well-being services like a massage or gym visit, every encounter contributes to the vitality of our home region.
Community involvement is at the heart of what we do. Together with local schools and associations, we participate in regenerative initiatives such as language and cultural exchange visits, nature projects and community days. Guests who wish to take part can join meaningful local activities – from removing invasive plant species and planting trees to maintaining hiking trails – simple acts that give back to nature and nurture connection.
Many of our cottages are built with ecological principles in mind, helping to minimize energy use and environmental impact. To conserve resources, we avoid unnecessary laundry changes or interim cleaning during short stays and encourage guests to switch off lights and devices when not in use. We provide each cottage a comprehensive guest information book with practical guidelines on topics such as recycling, Everyman’s Rights, and respectful ways to enjoy nature.

We also support sustainable travel choices by offering transfers from Vaala railway station for guests arriving by train. During winter, rental clothing is available to help visitors enjoy snowy adventures responsibly without needing to purchase new gear.
Local food culture is another cornerstone of our regenerative approach. Our own catering service, Hideouts Dining, has been awarded the Arctic Food Lab label – a recognition of commitment to northern culinary traditions and sustainable food. We collaborate with nearby farms, fishers, and producers: grains from Kinnusen Mylly mill, meat from local farms, fish from Lake Oulujärvi, Vaalan Juustola cheese, berries and mushrooms from the surrounding forests. Our local chefs transform these pure northern ingredients into memorable dining experiences that tell the story of our region through taste.
At Oulujärvi Luxury Hideouts, regenerative tourism is not just a principle – it’s a way of life. Together with our guests, we aim to care for people and nature, create shared value, and ensure that every visit leaves our home just a little better than before.
